Do I need NDIS registration to work as an independent support worker?

No — and this is one of the most common misconceptions. Unregistered sole traders can work with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants without going through registration. This covers the majority of the market. Registration becomes necessary if you want to work with agency-managed participants or deliver certain regulated support types.

What qualifications do I need to work independently?

It depends on what supports you deliver. For most personal care and community access supports, a Certificate III in Individual Support is the baseline alongside an NDIS Worker Screening Check. Some support types require higher qualifications.

How do I actually find participants when I'm starting out?

The NDIS ecosystem runs on referrals — not job boards. The most effective way to find clients as an independent support worker is through support coordinators, local allied health providers, and participant community networks.

How quickly can I start earning once I begin the process?

Most of our clients are set up and invoicing their first participants within 4–6 weeks. The timeline depends on how quickly you complete the setup steps and how actively you pursue your first clients.

Can I register with the NDIS later if I start unregistered?

Absolutely — and for many people, this is actually the smarter path. Starting unregistered lets you build your client base, validate your business, and start earning much faster. Once you're established and want to access agency-managed participants or higher-funded support types, we can guide you through registration at that point.
